This transliteration system uses the following replacements for Russian letters that are absent in the Latin alphabet:

Special substitution rules provided by the standard:

The letter "е" is replaced by the letter "e" when it comes after consonants, and by "ye" after vowels and the letter ъ and ь. The letter "ё" is replaced by the sequence "ye" when it comes after consonants, except ч,ш,щ,ж, (it is replaced by "e" when it comes after the letters ч,ш,щ,ж), and by "yo" after vowels and the letter ъ and ь.
